Series: Exodus

God's Presence on the Journey

Ed Stetzer

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

The Offering and the Tabernacle (Exodus 25:1-8)

…“Tell the Israelites to take an offering for me. You are to take my offering from everyone who is willing to give.” (Exodus 25:1-2)

“They are to make a sanctuary for me so that I may dwell among them.” (Exodus 25:8)

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days.” Therefore the Jews said, “This temple took forty-six years to build, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. (John 2:19-21)

Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s temple and that the Spirit of God lives in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16)

I did not see a temple in it, because the LORD God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. (Revelation 21:22)

A Tabernacle for His Presence (Exodus 25:8; 40:34-35)

One Entry Gate (Exodus 27:9-16):
I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. (John 10:9)

Bronze Altar (Exodus 27:1-8):
For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with hands (only a model of the true one) but into heaven itself, so that he might now appear in the presence of God for us…But now he has appeared one time, at the end of the ages, for the removal of sin by the sacrifice of himself. (Hebrews 9:24,26)

Bronze Laver (Exodus 30:17-21):
But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared, he saved us—not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy—through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit. (Titus 3:4-5)

The Lampstand (Exodus 25:31-40):
Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

The Table with the Bread of the Presence (Exodus 25:23-30):
“I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again.” (John 6:35)

Ark of the Covenant and Mercy Seat (Exodus 25:10-22):God presented him as the mercy seat by his blood, through faith, to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his restraint God passed over the sins previously committed. (Romans 3:25)

But Christ has appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come. In the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands (that is, not of this creation), he entered the most holy place once for all time, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow, sprinkling those who are defiled, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God? (Hebrews 9:11-14)

God’s Presence among His people (Exodus 40:34-38)

The cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle…For the cloud of the LORD was over the tabernacle by day, and there was a fire inside the cloud by night, visible to the entire house of Israel throughout all the stages of their journey. (Exodus 40:34,38)

…present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. (Romans 12:1)

…be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2)

Reflection Question: Where in your life do you need to surrender to God as a living sacrifice? Where in your life do you need Him to transform you?
